Everything You'll Ever Need To Know About Cubic Zirconia Bridal Jewelry Sets: A Brief (I Promise) History
by Joe Bucciano
Although the cubic zirconia used in jewelry-making is all man-made, believe it or not, cubic zirconia actually does exist in nature!
- Cubic zirconia (also known as CZ) was first discovered in 1892. The natural crystals, however, are too small for use in jewelry. They are also extremely rare and hard-to-find.
- It wasn't even considered valuable until the 1960's, when the Russians found several uses for it in their space program.
By the way, cubic zirconia should not be confused with zircon, which is an entirely different gemstone (CZ is zirconium oxide; zircon is a zirconium silicate).
I never liked history either. Let's move on…
Cubic Zirconia Gets Its Groove On
No one thought to use cubic zirconia for jewelry making until 1969. Techniques were developed to make it higher quality, and it was discovered that it could be tinted by adding minerals to it while it was in its molten state. Cubic zirconia is now available in all the birthstone colors, as well as many other colors.
Why CZ Is Perfect For Your Bridal Jewelry
Because of cubic zirconia's durability, low cost, and close visual likeness to diamonds, it has remained the most important diamond simulant. The only other diamond simulant that comes close is moissanite.
Cubic Zirconia vs. Moissanite
Moissanite, like cubic zirconia, is a manmade gemstone often used as an alternative to diamonds. BUT…
- In a side-by-side comparison of optical properties, cubic zirconia more closely resembles diamonds than does moissanite, and is considered by many experts to be the better diamond substitute. In fact, CZ actually has a bit more "fire" (sparkle) than real diamonds! Moissanite is not as brilliant as either cubic zirconia or diamonds.
- Moissanite is far more expensive than cubic zirconia. Per carat, CZ ranges from about $30 to $100. Moissanite is typically $400 to $800 per carat — so a moissanite bridal jewelry set will cost far more than an equivalent CZ set.
Cubic zirconia is durable enough to wear every day (on the Mohs hardness scale, it's about an 8-8.5). It can be safely cleaned with either a mild detergent or gem cleaner. |
Selecting The Perfect Bridal Jewelry Set For Your Wedding Day
by Heather Dworkin-Bucciano, Certified Stress Management Consultant and Bridal Coach
Your wedding day… Let's face it: it really is all about you! One of the first things someone will mention when speaking about a wedding is, "The bride was beautiful!"
Your bridal jewelry set should, of course, be complementary to your own personal taste and style. If you are known for rarely wearing jewelry, then your wedding day may not be the right time to try something crazy and wild. If a single strand of tasteful pearls is your speed, then perhaps a double strand will be just right for you.
On the other hand, if you are the kind of girl who follows the trends, and comes across as more of a bold person, then making a statement with your bridal jewelry set would come across well. Of course, you should always consider the silhouette of your dress, figure and stature.
The first question I always ask a bride when choosing her jewelry set for the big day is this: what kind of neckline does your bridal dress have? Strapless is all the rage right now. If your dress is strapless, then a necklace that sits high up on the neck such as a pearl choker will always work well, particularly if the top of the bodice is cut straight across.
There are some exceptions to this rule… If your wedding dress is mermaid or sheath, then your necklace would work well coming down close to the top of the dress, or even hanging down onto a sweetheart neckline on a strapless gown.
What you do with your hair can also help determine the type of bridal jewelry you will wear for the big day. If you are wearing an updo and going for a stronger necklace, then studs on your ears will always be tasteful and beautiful, once again keeping your own personality in the equation. That doesn't mean you can't go all out and choose a bolder necklace and earrings set if that is the type of affair you are having and it will compliment your individuality.
Also be aware that if you are wearing a tiara, the types of stones in your headpiece must also be in your bridal jewelry, so that they form a matching set. Keep that in mind if you already have a piece of bridal jewelry you'd like to wear, such as a family heirloom. Always try everything on together so you can ensure, for instance, that all the pearls are the same color, from the necklace to the earrings and tiara, and don't forget the embellishments on the dress and veil.
When it comes to earrings, bring them with you for the hair trial. Perhaps you are wearing your hair long and flowing down your back. Then earrings which are a little larger would certainly be appropriate and create just the right amount of sparkle around your face when your hair swings as you dance the night away!
